Choosing the right team building activity for your event

Being tasked with organising your first team building event can be quite an ordeal for some people, it’s actually very simple!

In this current climate some businesses event budgets are not as they were and finding the funds for their team building or away day event can be a difficult task. However just because times are hard and everyone is watching the pennies it doesn’t mean that your employees motivation and drive to succeed should suffer!

If there was ever a good time to motivate staff through team building and reward days then now is the time! It’s a proven fact that getting a group of people together away from the office for an afternoon or full day will brighten their horizons and make them return to the office with a zest for work.

Ok, so how do you go about making a safe decision on what is best for your team or clients?

Firstly and foremost you should agree on what the goal or outcomes from the event should be. Ask your self some simple questions about the work place that led you to looking into the idea of a team building event in the first place -

Does your team need motivating to achieve better sales figures?

Have you experienced a lack of communications between departments?

Has the dynamics of your company changed and people need to gel together better in order to become more team focused?

Have certain teams or departments excelled in their area without recognition?

Next look into the personalities of your staff and decide on the best possible event scenario –

How physical should the event be? (Some people may struggle with the event choice)

Where should the event take place? – Indoors or outdoors? – Time of the year

How competitive should the exercise be? (Competitive events between teams do not always bring out team bonding!)

Where geographically should the event be?  - This choice could lead to extra costs from accommodation etc

What events have been done before?

What has the feed back been like from previous events if any? (Choosing the same activities from a previous event that was held that had poor feedback could prove negative)

Should the event create an experience where teams are competing against each other or should they all work to one common goal?

Lastly look to incorporate a message from the day – Your staff will remember and put more effort into the day if they know the real reason behind your event!
